At the midlevel stage, it’s natural to start asking bigger questions about direction, stability, and long-term goals. Many attorneys see “in-house” as the logical next step—something calmer, more predictable. And sometimes, it is.
But it’s worth pausing before making that shift.
Partnership decisions are rarely just about performance. They’re shaped by timing, internal dynamics, and evolving firm needs—factors you can’t fully control. Staying in one place and waiting can quietly turn into giving up agency.
A lateral move offers something different: choice. It allows you to step into a new environment where your skills may be seen more clearly, and where the path forward might be more aligned with your growth. Sometimes, being “new” creates space for possibilities that didn’t exist before.
Going in-house can be fulfilling—but it can also narrow your options earlier than you expect. If there’s even a small part of you that wonders about partnership, it may be worth exploring that path a bit longer, in a setting that supports it.
You don’t need to have it all figured out. But you do deserve to put yourself in environments where your future feels open, not predetermined.
Sometimes, the most grounded decision isn’t choosing certainty—it’s choosing to keep doors open.
