BigLaw Is Consolidating Again — What the New Wave of Law Firm Mergers Means for the Legal Market

Law firm mergers are no longer occasional headline events—they've become a defining trend in BigLaw.

We've already seen major combinations reshape the market, including A&O Shearman. Now attention has shifted to the next wave, including Ashurst + Perkins Coie and the proposed Hogan Lovells + Cadwalader combination.

From a firm's perspective, the strategy is clear: Broader geographic reach | Stronger practice platforms | Deeper client relationships | Greater scale in an increasingly competitive market.

From a recruiter's perspective, though, mergers rarely mean growth alone. They create movement.

As firms integrate, practice groups overlap, leadership evolves, and work allocation changes. Sometimes offices become overstaffed, promotion timelines shift, or attorneys find themselves competing for opportunities that once felt more predictable.

There's another dynamic that's easy to overlook: partner satisfaction.

Not every partner embraces a merger. Compensation structures change. Firm culture evolves. Strategic priorities shift. When key partners decide a combined platform isn't the right long-term fit, they often bring associates and entire teams with them.

That's why recruiter conversations tend to increase after major combinations. Not because attorneys should panic—but because informed attorneys stay prepared. Understanding your lateral options doesn't mean you're looking to leave. It means you're aware of the market and ready if your practice, office, or leadership team changes.

Mergers create opportunity. They also reward preparation.

If you're curious about how these combinations could affect your practice area, your market, or your long-term career, feel free to reach out or send me a DM. I'm always happy to talk through what's happening in the market.
